WSC Defeats Salem State, 3-2 For Immediate Release: 10/1/03 Contact: John Meany (508) 929-8730 1st Half 2nd Half Final Worcester State College (4-3) 3 0 3 Salem State (1-6) 1 1 2 Worcester, MA - In a game that featured three goals in the first seven minutes of play, the Worcester State College field hockey team defeated the Vikings of Salem State College, 3-2, on the turf of John Coughlin Memorial Field on the campus of Worcester State College.The Vikings jumped out to the 1-0 lead 35 seconds into the game as junior Jennifer Grant (Essex) knocked one past the Worcester State net minder. It didn’t take long for the Lancers to respond as less than three minutes later freshman Jennifer Lyons (Norwood) found Ashley Bonina (Marlboro) who scored to knot the score at 1-1. Worcester State went out to a 2-1 lead on Bonina’s second of the game on a feed from Andrea McAllister (Leominster) with 28:14 remaining. Worcester State took a 3-1 lead into the half after Christen Watt (Hubbardston) scored an unassisted goal with 8:40 remaining in the half. The Lancers continued to push the action for much of the second half but were unable to put any more points on the board. Salem State pulled to within one with 11:40 remaining in the game on a goal by sophomore Patricia Brennan (Beverly) but the Vikings were unable to come up with the equalizer. The win improves the Lancers to 4-3 on the season while the loss drops the Vikings to 1-6. WSC goaltender Alisha Bates (Palmer) made four saves in net for the Lancers while her counterpart Meaghan Oskirko (Lancaster) made 5 saves for Salem State. The Worcester State field hockey team will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Southern Maine to take on the Huskies.
