Worcester State Beats Colby-Sawyer on Senior Day, 11-4

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College baseball team earned their 20th win of the season Sunday afternoon at Fitton Field on the campus of Holy Cross with an, 11-4, victory over Colby-Sawyer College.  The win came on senior day as 8 Worcester State Lancers were honored in pre-game festivities.  The win is Worcester State’s 6th in a row and they have now won 14 of 17 as they head towards their regular season finale on Tuesday.  The Lancers are now 20-16 while Colby-Sawyer falls to 14-21.

The Chargers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning.  With two outs third baseman Chris Hartery (Billerica, MA) tripled and scored on a wild pitch.  The Lancers answered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs.  Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) singled up the middle to score Matt Hart (Easton, MA) who was hit by a pitch and Chris Logan (Spencer, MA) who doubled down the left field line.

After a scoreless second inning, Colby-Sawyer got on the board in the top of the third inning.  Catcher Ben Sweeney (Narragansett, RI) walked and stole second.  He scored on a two out single to left by junior Chris Gaeta (Lynn, MA) to tie the game at, 2-2.  Worcester State would unbreak the tie and take the lead for good in the bottom of the third.  Hart led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball.  Freshman Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA) pinch ran for Hart and scored on a ground out by Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA).  With two outs and the bases loaded, Worcester State scored their second run of the frame when an error by the shortstop off the bat of leftfielder Mike McCormack (Newburyport, MA) plated Logan who singled earlier.

Worcester State added two more in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Logan and Gusha to make the score, 6-2.

The Chargers would add a run in the fifth when Gaeta singled home Sweeney who led off the frame with a single up the middle.

The Lancers would put the game away for good in the bottom of the sixth scoring 4 runs with the big blow coming on a three run blast by senior Nate Nelson (Worcester, MA).  The homerun was Nelson’s 10th of the year and 5th in the last 5 games.  Worcester State would add a single run in the seventh and Colby-Sawyer would round out the scoring with a solo run in the 8th for the, 11-4 final.

Senior Josh Buzzell (New Braintree, MA) got his second win of the season.  Vinny Vilardi (Boxford, MA) took the loss for the visitors.

The Lancers had several outstanding offensive performances.  Logan was 3-for-5 with 4 runs scored and Gusha was 4-for-5 with 4 RBI on the day.  Gaeta put together a 4-for-5 day for the Chargers with a pair of RBI.

Worcester State, who earned a share of the regular season MASCAC title, will conclude their regular season on Tuesday when they travel to MIT.
