The Worcester State College Lancers received a pair of outstanding pitching performances en route to sweeping the Vikings in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader played this afternoon at the New Salem State College Baseball Field.
The Vikings (22-11, overall; 6-4 MASCAC) were able to come up with
just a pair of hits in the opener against sophomore Joey Lucier.
Junior Rob Coppola (Revere) and freshman Ryan Kane (Nahant) stroked
a single and a double, respectively, for the Vikings in the first
inning, but the home team was unable to score and was held hitless
for the rest of the game. Lucier struck out six and walked just one
in going the distance. Starter Ken Luongo (Wilmington), who picked
up the loss for SSC, worked six innings, struck out seven, walked
four and gave up just one earned run. Chris Logan collected two hits
for the Lancers (14-14, overall; 6-4 MASCAC), who plated all their
runs in the fourth on four hits and an error.
Game two saw the Lancers once again score their runs in one inning,
the fifth, off starter Al Miner (Rochester). WSC senior Nate Nelson
produced an RBI double and and later scored on a two-out infield
error. Senior Mike Addesa (Revere) went 2-for3 with a double while
Kane, Luongo and sophomore Matt Gusdorf (Reston, VA) each collected
one of SSC's five hits. Sophomore Craig McBride recorded the win for
the visitors, logging 6.1 innings, scattering five hits, issuing two
free passes and picking up a strike out. Junior Andy Cunningham
faced three batters in the last inning to earn the save.
SSC's next games will be Monday, April 21 when the Vikings host the
Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a MASCAC doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
