Worcester State Knocks Off Colby-Sawyer, 9-7

New London, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday afternoon but was unable to hold on to the lead as Worcester State scored three runs in the top of the eighth and one more in the top of the ninth to take the 10-7 victory in the regular season finale for the Chargers.
Worcester got on the board early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after a Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, Mass.) single scored Tom Huddleson (Braintree, Mass.). The Lancers added one more run in the top of the third to take the early 2-0 lead.
The Chargers answered in their half of the third when Kris Ramsay (Gardiner, Maine) reached on an error that scored Kevan Donovan (Nashua, N.H.), making the score 2-1. One more run for the Chargers in the bottom of the fourth made the score 2-2 thanks to a Steve Hansen (Southbury, Conn.) single, scoring Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.).
Worcester added a run in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-2 before breaking the game open in the top of the seventh, when they plated three more runs to take the 6-2 lead.
Colby-Sawyer answered in their half of the seventh, plating five runs thanks in large part to a two RBI single from senior Nate Duncklee (Farmingdale, Maine) to help the Chargers retake the lead, 7-6.
As the weather worsened, so did the Chargers situation, as the Lancers hung three more runs on the board in the top of the eighth, retaking the lead 9-7 thanks to Chris Gusha (Rutland, Mass.) triple that plated two runs.
The Lancers added one more run in the top of the ninth making the score 10-7 before the game was called due to heavy rain.
For Colby-Sawyer, Justin Lewis (Springfield, Vt.) took the loss. Hansen went 2-for-4 from the plate, with an RBI. Duncklee, Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) and Ramsay each added two RBI’s each for the Chargers in the loss..
For Worchester, Chris Logan (Spencer, Mass.) went 5-for-5 with two doubles and scored four runs. Huddleson went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
Colby-Sawyer, 18-17 overall, will next be in action in the opening round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament, scheduled to being Tuesday, May 1. Playoff pairing will not be announced until Monday afternoon.
Worchester will host MIT in the final game of their 2007 campaign on May 1 at 3 p.m.
