Worcester State Baseball Drops Pair To Salem

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer baseball team dropped an important Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Tivnan Field falling to the Salem State College Vikings by the final scores of, 3-1 and 11-5.  The game was originally scheduled for Patriot’s Day.  The afternoon’s losses drop the Lancers to 9-18 (3-7 MASCAC) while Salem State improves to 13-14 (4-4 MASCAC).

In game 1, all the scoring was done in the first two innings as catcher Marc Crovo (Melrose, MA) led off the game with a walk and after a pop out to the third baseman, shortstop Bobby Celentano (Peabody, MA) homered over the right field fence to give the Vikings a, 2-0, lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Lancers scored their lone run when junior Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) singled home freshman Tom Huddleston (Braintree, MA) who opened the inning getting hit by a pitch.

Salem State added the third run in the top of the second inning when third baseman Mike Adessa (Revere, MA) opened the frame with a double to right field and scored on a throwing error by the Worcester State shortstop.

Salem State starter Bo Gillette (Malden, MA) settled down after a rocky first inning to get the win.  Gillette went the distance scattering 6 hits and striking out 3.  Worcester State hurler Craig McBride (Attleboro, MA) had a strong performance also going the distance giving up 6 hits and striking out 3.

In game 2, Worcester State took a 3-0 lead into the third inning as they scored a pair in the bottom of the first inning and a single run in the bottom of the second.  Chris Gusha added to his RBI total in the bottom of the first driving home Chris Logan (Spencer, MA) who led off with a walk.  The Lancer’s second run came on a first and third double steal with Gusha crossing the plate with Worcester State’s second run.  In the bottom of the second, Huddleston led off on a walk and advanced all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt by the Vikings.  Sophomore Kyle Parmenter (Shrewsbury, MA) singled home Huddleston to put Worcester State up, 3-0.

Salem State would answer back in the top of the third as they scored all the runs they would need pushing across 6 runs in the inning, 5 of them unearned.  A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no out.  The first Viking run came via a hit batter.  Then the Lancers defense fell apart.  A come backer to the mound was thrown away to plate the second Viking run.  An error at first base ensued letting the Vikings’ third run score.  Another hit batter scored the run put the Vikings ahead, 4-3.  A fielder’s choice forced home another run and the scoring was rounded out when an error by the shortstop allowed the sixth Salem Sate run to score.

Worcester State added a run in the bottom of the third inning on a Chris Gusha home run and scored their fifth run on a Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA) solo blast in the bottom of the fifth to get cut the lead to, 6-5.  Salem posted 5 runs in the top of the seventh to close out the game.

Senior Erik Willett (Salisbury, MA) got the win for Salem State while Mike Borowiec (Spencer, MA) took the loss.

Worcester State will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Fitchburg State.  Salem State will host Fisher College on Monday.
