Worcester State Baseball Falls Twice To MCLA
Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer baseball team lost a pair of Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference games to the MCLA Trailblazers by the final scores of, 8-6 and 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Tivnan Field at Lake Park. The losses drop the Lancers to 9-16 (3-5 MASCAC) while MCLA improves to 9-12 (4-2).
In game 1, Worcester State rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the game at, 6-6, but the Trailblazers scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the opener, 8-6.
Worcester State got on the board in the bottom of the first when Nate Nelson (Worcester, MA) homered over the center field fence for his sixth round-tripper of the year. Worcester State plated another run in the bottom of the second when catcher Chris Logan (Spencer, MA) went first to third on a sacrifice bunt and forced a throwing error allowing him to score.
MCLA tied the game in the top of the third frame when Steve Sullivan (Wareham, MA) had a bases loaded RBI single to cut the lead in half. MCLA then tied the game when Cory Burtman (Norwood, MA) was hit by a pitch. MCLA took the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by third baseman Anthony Bruno (Queens, NY).
The Lancers tied the game up in the bottom of the
inning when Logan hit a sacrifice fly scoring Chris Gusha
(Rutland, MA).
MCLA catcher Joe Belmosto (Marshfield, MA) then pushed the
Trailblazers back ahead in the top of the fifth inning with a solo
blast over the center field fence. MCLA then scored a pair of
unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a, 6-3 lead.
Worcester State battled back in the bottom of the inning. Nelson was hit by a pitch and Gusha lined a homerun over the right centerfield fence to cut the lead to, 6-5. Chris Logan who singled to left earlier in the frame came across with the game-tying run on an error by the MCLA shortstop.
MCLA won the game in the top of the seventh on a 2 RBI single by shortstop Pat Negrini (West Stockbridge, MA).
Jim Pesente (Whitman, MA) the reigning ECAC and MASCAC Pitcher of the Week got the win scattering 4 hits and striking out 5 on the afternoon.
In game 2, The Lancers led, 1-0, after five innings before MCLA scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to come from behind for the, 2-1 win. Worcester State scored in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Tom Huddleston (Braintree, MA) singled home Derek Gomes (Easton, MA) who doubled to open up the inning.
MCLA got the game winners when Burtman doubled home Bruno who has walked. Burtman would score the game winner on a wild pitch to the backstop.
Andrew Gaines (Holyoke, MA) got the win for MCLA and game 1 winner Jim Pesente earned his first save of the season. Lancer Steve DiRoberto (Worcester, MA) took the tough loss.
Worcester State returns to action tomorrow when the host Salem State at Tivnan Field. MCLA will host Fitchburg State tomorrow.
