Baseball Drops Pair To UMass-Boston, 10-2 & 11-3
 

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games Sunday afternoon to the visiting Beacons of UMass-Boston at Worcester Academy’s Gaskill Field.  UMass-Boston took the first game, 10-2, behind a 14 hit attack and coming from behind to take the nightcap, 11-3.  The losses drop the Lancers to 6-9 on the season while the Beacons improve to 8-5. 

In game 1, UMass-Boston jumped out to a, 7-0, lead posting 4 runs in the top of the second inning and 3 more in the top of the third.  The Lancers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to, 7-3, but the Beacons responded with a three spot in the top of the seventh for the, 10-2, final.  UMass-Boston starter Mike Dorval (Belchertown, MA) threw three hitless innings before junior Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) broke up the no-hitter with a single through the left side.  Dorval went on to pitch 6 innings giving up just 2 runs on 4 hits to get his second win of the year.  Catcher Joel Priscella (Quincy, MA) knocked in 3 runs in the game behind a 2-for-4 performance.  First baseman Jamie Soto and third baseman Steve Bowers (Portland, OR) each knocked in a pair of runs.  Shortstop Bryan Curran (Brockton, MA) was also 3-for-4 on the day.  Gusha was the only multiple hit batter for the Lancers going 2-for-3 in the game.

In game 2, Worcester State plated single runs in the first and the third innings to lead, 2-0, after three complete innings.  The Beacons then proceeded to score 9 straight runs posting 3 in the top of the fourth and 6 in the top of the fifth.  After the Lancers scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth, the Beacons scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the, 11-3, final score. UMass-Boston hurler Ryan Murphy (Pembroke, MA) came on in relief to take the win evening his record at 1-1 on the year.  Right fielder Sean Ketterer (Plymouth, MA) and designated hitter Dan Ciocca (Natick, MA) each drove in 3 runs.  The Beacons pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap with four players getting multiple hits in the contest.

 

Worcester State will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Endicott College.  UMass-Boston will visit Salem State on Tuesday afternoon.
