Worcester State Beats Colby-Sawyer, 14-7 For Immediate Release: 4/7/04 Contact: John Meany (508) 929-8730 Worcester, MA - The Worcester State Lancer baseball team staked the visiting Chargers of Colby-Sawyer a 7-0 first inning lead, but exploded for a 7-run second inning of their own and went on to defeat the Chargers 14-7 in a game played at Worcester Academy Wednesday afternoon. The win pushes the Lancers’ record to 12-6. While Colby-Sawyer drops to 3-10.Six Worcester State players had multiple hit games including reigning Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Player of the Week Bobby Montalto (Hudson, MA) who continued his red-hot hitting going 2-4 (3B, HR) with 4 RBI. Second baseman Kirk Russell (Charlton, MA) went 2-3 and drove in 5 base runners. Third baseman Zac Attaway (Hudson, MA) had three hits and drove in a run. Colby-Sawyer jumped all over the Lancer starter as they scored 7 runs in the top of the first inning. Kevan Donovan (Nashua, NH) walked to open the game followed by a Chris Ames (Franklin, NH) single. Jon Clay (Hopkinton, NH) drove in the Charger’s first run of the game with an RBI single. Justin Litchfield (Marshfield, MA) hit a triple knocking in two more runs. Nate Duncklee (Farmingdale, ME) singled to score Litchfield. A Jason Howse (Reading, MA) single put two men on base and promptly driven in by Trevor Dorian (Monmouth, ME) who doubled. Dorian advanced to third on a single by John Johanson (Medford, MA) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Donovan to close out the Colby-Sawyer scoring. After going quietly in the bottom of the first, Worcester State scored 7 runs before recording an out in the bottom of the second. Attaway led off with a triple and was knocked in by Dan Walker (Templeton, MA). A Tom Shea single and a walk to Nick Gennetti (Wilmington, MA) loaded the bases. Second baseman Kirk Russell singled knocking in two runs. Montalto followed with a triple scoring Russell and Gennetti. Senior captain Jeff Wood (Hudson, MA) doubled home Montalto and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bear Dunn who sent the Charger’s centerfielder back to the fence. The Lancers got the game-winning run in the bottom of the third inning when Russell hit a sacrifice fly driving home Shea from third. Worcester State went on to score six more runs highlighted by a 2-run homer onto the street by Montalto. Junior Tom Cousineau (Worcester, MA) did an outstanding job on the hill for the Lancers pitching 6 2/3 innings of 3-hit relief earning the win. Matt Smith (Franklin, NH) took the loss for the Chargers. Worcester State will next host UMass-Boston at Assumption College on Thursday, while Colby-Sawyer will return to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Gordon College for a doubleheader.
