Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 1999

John Coughlin, Jr. ‘84

John Coughlin, Jr. served as an assistant hockey coach with his dad, Coach John Coughlin Sr., for eight seasons. These were the glory days of Lancer Hockey at Worcester State College. John helped to guide the team to two ECAC Hockey Championships and finished in second place a third time from 1972 through 1979.

He was responsible for recruiting Worcester State College's only All-American Hockey player as well as six ECAC All Stars. As a player at American International, John was a member of one ECAC Championship Team and a member of a team that finished second in the tournament. The new astroturf all-purpose field on campus is named in honor of his father, John Coughlin Sr.

 Charles “Nunny'" J. George, Jr., ‘60

During his time at Worcester State College, Charles "Nunny" J. George, Jr. distinguished himself as an outstanding basketball player. Although he played for Clark University for one year, he played for Worcester State College for three years and made a tremendous impact on his team and the Lancer reputation. Charles averaged 15.5 points a game for a team that had a 36-15 record over the three year span. His consummate professionalism and team spirit brought him respect and admiration from his teammates and Worcester State College.

 Carrie Gladden ‘92

Carrie Gladden was an outstanding basketball and softball player for the Lancers for two years after transferring from Salem State.

To this day, she still holds ten Worcester State College Women's Basketball records. She was named a Massachusetts State College All Star both years and led the team to two straight ECAC Playoffs. The Lancers had a 38-16 record.

Carrie also distinguished herself in softball for Worcester State College. She was a two-time Massachusetts State College All Star and a member of the team that won the ECAC Championship in 1990. The team was 41-15 in two years.

This record is a testament to Carrie's leadership qualities as she served as a captain for both the Lancer Women's Basketball Team and the Lancer Softball team.

Alan Pettway ‘94

While he was a student athlete at Worcester State College, Alan Pettway distinguished himself in basketball. He has the singular distinction to be the college's all time leading scorer in basketball with 2,205 career points.. He was a four year starter and served as captain of the Lancer team in his senior year. To this day, he still holds eight college records in basketball and a school record of232 three-pointers.

The team was 64-44 during Alan Pettway's four years. The Lancers competed in the ECAC Tournament in 1992-93 and the NCAA National Tournament in 1993-94. Alan Pettway was named Massachusetts State College Conference All Star for three straight years and was named second team All New England All Star twice.

 The 1980 Women's Basketball Team

The Lancer Women's Basketball Team distinguished itself and brought pride to Worcester State College Athletics in 1980. This outstanding team won the AlAW Division ill National Championship, the only national team championship in the college's history. It was a tremendous victory when the Lancers defeated Wisconsin (LaCrosse) 76- 73 at Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington. It was a time in the college's history that no one will ever forget.
