Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 1993

Patrick Carmody '86

 

Patrick F. Carmody, your accomplishments in track and football are well documented and you achieved All American status at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track Championships in the hammer throw in 1985 and 1986. Not only did you gain individual fame but you also provided inspiration and leadership to your teammates.

 

You earned 12 varsity letters while participating for four years in football, outdoor and indoor track. Your leadership qualities were recognized and you were selected a captain of all three teams in your senior year.

 

At the NCAA's you had a throw of 172' 3" in 1985 and 170' 5" in 1986 in the hammer throw and you also established the Worcester State College record of 174' 2" in the hammer in 1985. You were also selected All New England in track in your junior and senior years.

 

You were named a captain of Worcester State's first varsity football team in 1985 and were the starting center on a team that went 5-0 that year. You also were a member of the Club football team for three years. In 1986 you were selected the City of Worcester Scholar Athlete of the Year and were also named a National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete in your junior year.

 

You are currently an environmental engineer at New England Power Service Company.

Donna F. Devlin

 

Donna F. Devlin, you are the most successful coach in the history of Worcester State College and established a level of excellence that is truly legendary. You were an outstanding role model and you played a major role in the personal, professional and athletic development of your players.

 

Your basketball teams compiled an amazing 188-52 record, a .783 winning percentage, in 12 years and you brought both national recognition to both Worcester State College and the City of Worcester when your team won the national championship in 1980. Your team also finished 2nd in the nation in 1981. Your accomplishments were recognized when you were named the Coach of the Year nationally in 1980.

 

You also coached the softball team which had an amazing 102- 42 overall record in 11 years. Combined, your coaching record at Worcester State was 290-94 for a. 755 winning percentage. Your

teams dominated the Massachusetts State College Conference winning many league titles in both basketball and softball. Your basketball teams also won the Division 2 State MAlAW Championship and the Division III Regional EAIA W Championship several times.

 

Your leadership qualities are evident and you served as President of the National Women's Basketball Coaches Association and were a member of the United States Olympic Basketball selection committee.

 

You were an assistant professor of physical education at Worcester State and later worked as the associate athletic director and chairperson of the physical education department at Brandeis. You were an outstanding semi-pro softball pitcher and member of two national championship teams. An avid golfer you have won the club championship at Worcester Country Club five times, Framingham Country Club and Willoughby Country Club in Florida.

 

Donna F. Devlin, it is with great pride that we induct you into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

John F. Ethier '74

 

John F. Ethier, tennis has played a major role in your life as well as the entire Ethier family, many of whom represented Lancer tennis teams over the years.

 

You showed your relentless desire to perform to the best of your ability while spearheading the Worcester State College tennis team for four years. You played as the number 2 player as a freshman and went on to become the number 1 player in your sophomore, junior and senior years. You compiled

an excellent 41-11 singles record and combined for an outstanding 45-7 record in doubles, many of those matches played with your brother, Tim, making the Ethiers tough to beat.

 

You and Tim combined for a 14-2 doubles record in two years. You also combined with Hall of Famer Joe Gill to become one of the top MASCAC doubles teams. Your leadership qualities were evident since you were named the captain of the team in your junior and &senior years.

 

You had an outstanding senior year with 10 wins and 3 losses and you reached the finals of the Massachusetts State College Conference tennis tournament

 

During the 1970 season, the Lancers were represented by you, Tim and brother Mike on the same team. Another brother, Paul, who is deceased, also played tennis for the Lancers and was a captain of two teams and was also his class president. Your sister, Patty was also an outstanding player for the Lancers Women's teams and was a captain of her team.

 

All of the Ethier family tennis accomplishments must be attributed to your father Paul, who has been playing tennis for 55 years and taught all of you the game of tennis. At 78-years of age he is still playing tennis.

 

You are a member of the Shrewsbury Tennis Club and also play in a doubles league in Paxton. You are currently employed as a buyer for the Neles-Jamesbury Corp.

 

John F. Ethier, it is with great pride that we induct you into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

Donna Lapriore-Potenti '77

 

Donna Lapriore-Potenti, your talent, drive and determination have distinguished you as one of the most versatile athletes to ever wear a Worcester State uniform.

 

You played field hockey, basketball and softball and earned 12 varsity letters. Your leadership qualities resulted in you being a captain of all three teams. You played a key role in the field hockey team winning three straight state championships and were the leading scorer with 33 goals. You were named an All Star in field hockey and basketball in your junior and senior years and you were selected to try out for the United States Field Hockey team in your sophomore year.

 

You were a guard and forward for the basketball team scoring 663 career points and also hit an impressive .388 over your four year softball career while playing mostly in the outfield.

 

You were honored for your undergraduate achievements by selection to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and were a dean's list student in your junior and senior years.

 

You were the head field hockey coach at Holy Cross College for five years and served as an assistant basketball coach at Worcester State for two years. After graduation you played semi-pro basketball and also played on a mixed softball team which came in second and fourth in a national tournament. You continue to play softball today.

 

You are currently a teacher at the Webster Square Day Care Center.

 

Donna Lapriore-Potenti, it is with great pride that we induct you into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

John Smith '87

 

John Smith, you have distinguished yourself as the most outstanding football player to ever play for Worcester State College and you established many individual records, 16 of which still stand today and will stand for many years to come.

 

You were a captain of the first varsity football team that capped an amazing undefeated season with a 5-0 record and was ranked as high as 5th in New England. You were twice selected the winner of the prestigious Golden Helmet Award as the top player of the week in New England. You rushed for 232 yards and scored two touchdowns against Nichols in 1986 and you rushed for 200 yards and scored four touchdowns against Framingham State in 1987.

 

In 1986 you were the leading rusher in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) with 1,150 yards, an average of 127.8 per game, and finished 14th in the nation in rushing. You were selected the ECAC Player of the Week numerous times.

 

Your leadership abilities were evident as you were a captain of the team three straight years and were named NEFC All Conference three times. You were an All New England Honorable Mention All

Star in 1986 and were named honorable mention to the All American and Pizza Hut All Star teams in 1987.

 

Your individual records are too numerous to mention but some of the highlights include rushing for 2,608 career yards in just 25 games, an average of 113 yards per game for your career, and scoring an amazing 198 career points as you scored 32 touchdowns. You scored 28 points in a single game and rushed for 239 yards against William Paterson in 1985. During your career you carried the ball 564 times in 25 games for an amazing 22.5 carries each game. The Lancers were 16-7 in your three years and won the South Division of the NEFC in 1987 with a 7-2 record.

 

Perhaps the most fitting tribute to your excellent career was

when you were named the recipient of the Hal Chalmers Academic Award presented to the top student-athlete in the New England Football Conference in 1987.

 

You are currently employed by F. N. Murphy Properties as an equipment operator.

 

John Smith, it is with great pride that we induct you into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

Renee LaChapelle-Weihn '84

 

Renee LaChapelle-Weihn your exceptional athletic ability and competitive spirit as a basketball and softball player distinguished you as one of the most outstanding athletes to participate for Worcester State College.

 

You played four years of basketball, three years of softball and one year of field hockey, and finished your career as the second leading all time scorer in Women's basketball with 1,341 points and still hold the single season scoring average record with 19.2

points a game. You were a member of the 1981 team that won the state and regional championships and finished 3rd in the nation. You were an outstanding shortstop in softball and finished your career with a .325 batting average.

 

You were selected a MASCAC Conference all star three straight years in basketball and were also named to the All New England and ECAC basketball first teams twice. In softball, you were named an All New England All Star twice and were selected to the MASCAC All Star team three times. As a junior you played in the first annual New England Women's Coaches Association All Star game.

 

You showed outstanding leadership as captain of the basketball team twice and the softball team your senior year leading the team to an ECAD tournament bid. You hold the distinction of turning in an unassisted triple play in softball your freshman year.

 

You were honored for your undergraduate achievements by selection to the Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. You participated in the Summer Bay State games in 1985 in basket- ball and the team won a Bronze medal.

 

You went on to join the college coaching ranks as an assistant basketball coach at Worcester State during the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. You were the junior varsity coach at Northbridge High School in 1992-93.

 

You are currently employed by the State Department of Environmental Management.
