Greg Grum ‘00 Maureen Feyre Febonio ‘83 Maureen Feyre Febonio was an outstanding two-sport athlete for Worcester State College from 1979 through 1983 in the sports of softball and basketball. In softball, Maureen was a four starter in the Lancer outfield. She was a member of the 1981 Massachusetts State College Conference State title team which posted a 15-5 record and was captain of the softball team both her junior and senior seasons. After Maureen’s senior season, she was named a 1st Team Division III All-American as well as to the NCAA Division III East All-Region Team as an outfielder. On the basketball court, Feyre was a member of the most storied team in Worcester State history. As a freshman, Maureen was on the 1979-80 AIAW National Championship team. She was also a member of the team the following season that reached the Final Four of the national tournament. She was a captain of the basketball team her junior and senior seasons and an all-conference selection her junior year. Maureen graduated cum laude in 1983 with a degree in Urban Studies and was selected as a “Who’s Who in American Colleges". She was also a member of the Omirron Delta Upsilon Honor Society for Economics. It is with great pleasure that we induct Maureen Feyre Febonio into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame. Don Howard ‘51 Prior to attending Worcester State, Don Howard was an outstanding athlete at South High School. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, he enlisted at Worcester State under the GI Bill. Don was a four year starter on the men’s basketball team from 1948 through 1951 as well as an officer in the Men’s Athletic Association. He was elected co-captain of the team for the 1950 and 1951 seasons. Don led the team in scoring during the 1949-50 season scoring 241 points for a 13.8 points per game average. He also played one season on the newly formed varsity baseball team in 1950. Don went on to become a teacher in the Worcester Public school system coaching baseball, basketball and football wile at the elementary and junior high school levels. In 1965, he began his administrative career serving as the assistant principal at South High School. He went on to serve as the Director of Professional Personnel for the Worcester Public Schools from 1968 through 1978. Prior to his retirement in 1992, Don was a Labor Relations Consultant for the Massachusetts Teachers Association. He has a M.Ed. from Worcester State Teachers College and in 1957 received his law degree from Suffolk University Law School. A Lancer through and through, Don remains active with Worcester State serving in positions on the Alumni Advisory Board as well as the Executive Committee. He is a class agent for the Class of 1951 and this fall will begin serving on the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. He is married to Worcester State graduate Mary Jane Harvey, Class of 1953, and has three children and four grandchildren. It is with great pleasure that we induct Don Howard into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame. John Schaper John Schaper served as the Worcester State athletic trainer for 12 years from 1989 through 2001. He was the second full-time trainer at Worcester State following the legendary Oscar Larsson. Schaper oversaw the sports medicine coverage for Worcester State’s 20 varsity athletic teams and for six years ran the day to day operations of the Oscar Larson Fitness Center. Schaper is widely credited with the upgrade in equipment in the training room as well as forging a relationship with UMass Medical for coverage of ice hockey and football games. In addition to his athletic training duties, John taught for seven years in the Worcester State’s evening programs and also taught First Aid and CPR for all of the 12 years that he was at Worcester State. John is a nationally certified athletic trainer and while at Worcester State became a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA. He is currently a teacher and athletic trainer at Wachusett Regional High School. It is with great pleasure that we induct John Schaper into the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
1973-74 Ice Hockey Team The 1973-74 Worcester State College Ice Hockey Team was one of the top teams in the history of Worcester State College winning the ECAC Division III championship defeating Wesleyan University by the score of 11-5 in the championship game. The Lancers finished the season unbeaten in Division III action with a 8-0-1 record and were 14-7-1 overall. After the season the honors rolled in for individuals from that team. Junior forward Marv Degon was named a NAIA All-American at forward while senior Fran Johnson was named the ECAC Division III Player of the Year. Degon and Rick Gliesman earned All-ECAC 1at Team honors at forward, while Johnson earned the honor for his defensive work. Head
