Jason Akana '96 Jason Akana, '96 was an outstanding baseball player for the Lancers for three years and his leadership abilities were recognized as he was named a team captain during his senior year. In 1996, he won the NCAA Division III batting title with a .514 batting average and finished his career with a 398 batting average, seventh best all-time in Lancer history. While at Worcester State he established numerous new records in baseball including a 22 game hitting streak, 23 stolen bases in a season and 59 during his career. At that time he held the record for most assists in a season with 92, most assists in a career with 221, most career singles, 101, most singles in a season, 41, most at bats in a season, 122, and most career doubles, 36. His baseball jersey number has been retired. In 1996, he was selected third team All New England and was named to the Massachusetts State College All Conference 1st team. He was named the MASCAC Player of the Week twice. Upon graduation, he played professional baseball in the Independent League. He was an honor roll student at Worcester State and was named the College's Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1996. He is employed as a sales representative at Franklin Environmental Services, Inc. Lori (Davis) Bukowski '94 Lori (Davis) Bukowski '94 was an outstanding basketball and softball player for the Lancers for four years and her leadership qualities were evident as she was elected a captain of both teams. Lori played a 104 career softball games and had an outstanding .349 career batting average and was selected to the Mass. State College Conference (MASCAC) All Star 151 Team for three straight years at first base. She had 26 doubles, 7 triples and 2 home runs while leading her teams to an overall record of 74-35 and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 1990 when the team finished with a school record 25-10 record. She hit .393, 395. and .386 in her final three years. Lori played in 71 career basketball games and scored 361 points and had 298 career rebounds. She was named the Outstanding Female Senior Sportsman of the Year. She earned her Masters of Education degree in special education from Framingham State College in 1999 and is employed as a special education teacher in the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District. Curtis P. Degon '96 Curt Degon '96 was an outstanding ice hockey player for three years during the glory years of the Lancer hockey program. He scored 69 goals and had 72 assists for 141 career points, which put him 6'" as on the all-time scoring list. His leadership qualities were evident and he was named a teach captain for two straight years. He won the ECAC Division III scoring title and was selected the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week five times. He was selected a 1st team ECAC All Star twice. The Lancers competed in the post-season ECAC tournament for three straight years, winning the championship in 1973-74 and, reached the semi-finals in 1974-75 and were runner-ups in 1975-76. The Lancers competed against many of the hockey powerhouse teams during this ear and had an outstanding 14-7 record during the championship season. Curt was the recipient of the prestigious Mathew Hehir Memorial Award. He is employed in sales for A & E Distributions of Leominster. Timothy C. Ethier '73 Tim Ethier '73 was an outstanding tennis player for four years and a very important member of the basketball team for two seasons. He also played one year of varsity soccer. He was a captain of the tennis teams his junior and senior years and was a co-captain in basketball as a senior. Tim compiled an outstanding 41-10 record in tennis singles winning 80 percent of his matches and combined with his brother Jack for a school record 31-3 in doubles matches to win 91 percent of the doubles matches. He was a starter on the basketball team for two years during the 1971- 72 season when the team was 18-7 and 1972-73 when the team finished 17-8, two of the best seasons in Lancer history. He had five triple doubles (points, rebounds, assists) and 16 double-doubles and was awarded the Coaches Award for Contribution to the team in 1973. Tim was the senior class president in 1973 and was the winner of the Ella Mae Whitney Award for Contribution to the Senior Class. He is the third member of the Ethier family to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. His brother, John Ethier and sister, Patricia (Ethier) Marois are also members of the Worcester State College Athletic Hall of Fame. Ethier is a social studies teacher at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden and the owner of Tim Ethier Video Productions. He is chairman of the Holden Board of Selectmen. Scott E. Holland '97 Scott Holland '97 was the most outstanding football player in Lancer history. He was a four-year starter, and three-year captain of the Lancers. He is the all-time leader with 440 career tackles. Scott helped to lead the team to an outstanding 33-8 record, capped off by a 10-0 regular season in 1996. The Lancers won the New England Football Conference (NEFC) title in 1995 and 1996 and competed in post- season Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoffs both years. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the NEFC for three straight years, 1994, 1995 and 1996. He was selected to the NEFC All Star 1st Team four straight years and was named an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All Star three straight years. The Football Writers named him All New England in 1995 and 1996. He was selected a Division 2 & 3 Little All-American in 1994 and named a Football Gazette All-American in 1994 and 1995. He was selected an All-American by Hewlett Packard in 1995 and 1996. He was also selected a 1st team All-American by Football Quarterly Magazine in 1996. In 1998, he played professional football for the Munich Cowboys of the German Football League and currently plays for the Marlboro Shamrocks. He is a physical education teacher and head football coach at Bartlett High School in Webster. Francis J. Shea '71 Frank Shea '71 is being honored for his outstanding contribution to athletes. He has contributed an exceptional amount of time and dedication to Worcester State College. He has served on the Athletic Hall of Fame committee, as well as numerous other committees over the past 30 years, including the Worcester State College Alumni Association. Frank was one of the originators of the varsity soccer program and played on the soccer team for two years. He was also the manager of the Lancers ice hockey team for four years and also served as the public address system announcer and scorekeeper at hockey games for 12 years. While at Worcester State, he was the treasurer, vice-president and president of the Men's Athletic Association and was a member of the Lancer Society. He was also a sports writer for the yearbook committee. He has been very active with the Boy Scouts of America and has received numerous awards from civic and fraternal organizations. He is currently the G.E.D. State Administrator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Education. The 1961 Baseball Team The Lancer Baseball Team distinguished itself and brought pride to Worcester State College. During the 1964 season, the team achieved an undefeated record (13-0) and claimed the New England State College Championship on their way to finishing the season with the ranking as the # 1 Division III in New England.
