Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2000

John “Jack" E. Coleman '72

Jack Coleman was an outstanding Defenseman for the Lancers Hockey Team for four years. He was a captain of the 1972 team, which set a College record for wins in a season when the team finished with a 21-3 record.
 

To this day, Jack is still the all-time leading scorer as a defenseman with 37 career goals and 89 career points. In one game he scored five goals against Nichols College in a 7-4 win.
 

He served as Secretary and Vice-President of the Worcester State College Athletic Association for three years.

 

He coached ice hockey at Millbury High from 1970 to 1980 and his team was the South County Champion for 1973-74. From 1980 to 1995 he was a youth hockey coach in the South County and Bay State Leagues.

Jack still serves as the official scorer at all Worcester State College home hockey games.

 

Jack works in the sales department of United Liquors, L.T.D.

 

Assistant Professor and Coach James E. Girouard

 

Coach Jim Girouard organized and started the football program at Worcester State College in 1969. He coached the club team for years. Three of the team's reached the National Club Championship and the Lancers won the national title in 1980 under Jim's leadership. He was presented the Key to the City of Worcester on behalf of the team. His efforts to promote football throughout the years helped in the decision to have the Lancers join the NCAA Division Ill football ranks in 1985.

 

Jim was also an Assistant Basketball Coach at Worcester State College when the late Felix Masterson was the Coach. He was a member of the faculty and coach at WSC from 1969 to 1984.

 

He was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Braintree High and Storm Prep School in New York before being awarded a full scholarship at Boston University where he was quarterback of the football team and an outfielder-first baseman in baseball. He was named All New England in baseball and was a 1957 All Star in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

 

He has also coached at Holbrook and Silver Lake High Schools and was an assistant football coach at Harvard University from 1991 to 1994. He owns and manages Tucker's Tavern and Grille in Dennisport.

 

Jessica (Murphy) Jenkins '93

 

Jessica was an outstanding three sports star at Worcester State College and played in more games than any women in Lancer history. She played basketball, field hockey and softball and wore the blue and gold colors an amazing 262 times.

 

She was a captain of all three teams. She scored 420 points in basketball and had 383 assists in 105 games. She played 58 field hockey games and 99 softball games.

 

In softball she played every position, except first base and was named to the Mass State College All Star team and was also selected a 1993 ECAC Division ill New England All Star as a second baseman.

 

She was named the Outstanding Freshman Athlete of the Year and was named the Co-Female Athlete of the Year as a senior. In 1993, she was named the Worcester State NCAA Woman of the Year. She was an honor roll student for four years.

 

In 1996 Jessica was inducted into the Hopkinton High Athletic Hall of Fame, For the past seven years, she had been the varsity field hockey coach at Hopkinton competing in two state tournaments. She was an Assistant Basketball Coach at Medfield High for three years.

 

She works in the accounting department at Kangaroo Crossing.

 

Francine A. Lapierre '90

 

Francine was the pioneer of the Women's Track program at Worcester State College and established a standard of excellence for future athletes who followed her. She competed in both indoor and outdoor track for four years and was a captain of the team her senior year.

 

She established three college records, which still stand today. She set the indoor standard in the 20 Ib weight throw of 47' 5" at Bates College in 1990, the indoor record for the shot put at Holy Cross College with a throw of 37' 7" in 1989 and the outdoor shot put record of 38' 2" at WPI in 1990.

 

Her name also appears in the record book in 6th place in the discus and 5th place in the hammer. She is the College's 5th all-time leading scorer with 251 career points.

 

Francine was an assistant track coach at Worcester State from 1990 to 1993 coaching both men and women in indoor and outdoor track.

 

She is employed as a procedures clerk at the Worcester Housing Court.

 

The 1976-77 Ice Hockey Team

 

The Lancers Ice Hockey Team distinguished itself and has brought pride to Worcester State College. During the 1976-77 season the team claimed the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Ice Hockey Post-Season Tournament. They are honored as a team for their achievements.
